Need an RCMP criminal record check from Italy? This guide covers each stage, where to book fingerprinting, realistic timelines, what can go wrong, and how apostille and Italian translation work.
You can have your fingerprints taken in Italy and then send them to an RCMP-accredited company in Canada for digitisation and electronic submission to the RCMP. An RCMP Criminal Record Check from Italy is a Canadian fingerprint-based background check, not an Italian police certificate.
The process is available to applicants living anywhere in Italy, including Milan, Rome, Florence, Naples, Turin, Bologna, Venice, and other cities. The important part is getting the fingerprints collected correctly and making sure the original paperwork reaches an accredited Canadian company rather than being mailed directly to the RCMP.
The overseas process has four practical stages:
| 1. Fingerprints in Italy | Get all ten fingerprints taken in black ink on the required paper form. |
| 2. Original card to Canada | Send the completed original fingerprint form to an RCMP-accredited fingerprint company in Canada. |
| 3. Electronic RCMP submission | The Canadian company digitizes the fingerprints and submits the application electronically to CCRTIS. |
| 4. RCMP certificate | CCRTIS processes the application and the RCMP issues the Criminal Record Check. |
The RCMP says applicants outside Canada must first obtain a paper copy of their fingerprints from an authorized agency and then submit the application through an accredited fingerprint company in Canada. Fingerprints sent directly to CCRTIS from outside Canada will not be accepted.

You do not automatically need both. The right document depends on what the requesting authority asks for. An Italian Certificato del Casellario Giudiziale covers Italy's judicial records, while an RCMP Criminal Record Check searches Canada's criminal-record database.
| Italian Certificato del Casellario Giudiziale | RCMP Criminal Record Check | |
| Issued by | Italian Procura della Repubblica | Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) |
| Records searched | Italy's judicial-record system | Canada's National Repository of Criminal Records |
| Identity check | Personal information | Ten rolled fingerprints + personal information |
| How you apply | Through the Italian Ministry of Justice/local Procura | Through an RCMP-accredited fingerprint company in Canada |
| Language | Italian | English or French |
| Processing | Varies by Procura | 3 business days or less for a no-match; about 120 business days if manual processing is required |
| For use in the other country | May require apostille and translation | May require Canadian apostille and Italian translation |
Which one do you need?
An Italian criminal record certificate should not be used as a substitute when the authority specifically asks for an RCMP criminal record check.
For applicants in Italy, mobile fingerprinting is a popular option because the Canadian paperwork is not something every local police office handles routinely.
Mobile Appointment Coverage - Estimates
| Location | Mobile fingerprinting | Planning lead time* |
| Rome | Home, office, hotel, university and other suitable locations | 1–3 business days |
| Milan | Home, office, hotel and other suitable locations | 1–3 business days |
| Florence | Subject to appointment availability | 2–4 business days |
| Turin | Subject to appointment availability | 2–4 business days |
| Bologna | Subject to appointment availability | 2–4 business days |
| Naples | Subject to appointment availability | 2–4 business days |
| Other Italian locations | Confirm availability before booking | Varies by location |
*These are planning estimates for a private mobile appointment, not RCMP processing times. Availability can change by city, date, travel requirements, and appointment volume.
Globeia currently offers mobile fingerprint in Italy for RCMP applications, including C-216C and equivalent cards, with availability depending on location.

Can an Italian Police Station Take Your RCMP Fingerprints?
Sometimes a local police authority may be willing to take fingerprints for an overseas application, but this should not be treated as a guaranteed service.
The practical problem is the Canadian paperwork.
A Questura or Carabinieri station may primarily handle fingerprinting connected to Italian police, immigration, identity, or judicial procedures. Staff may decline to complete a foreign fingerprint card, may not stock the Canadian form, or may not provide the agency/collector information required for the Canadian submission.
Before going to a police station, call and confirm that it will:
A police station saying it can take fingerprints does not necessarily mean it will complete a Canadian RCMP card.
Can the Canadian Embassy or Consulate in Italy Take Your Fingerprints?
No. The Canadian embassy or consulate in Italy do not provide fingerprint collection intended for RCMP criminal record checks.
The RCMP's overseas instructions direct applicants to an authorized agency in the country where they are located and then to an RCMP-accredited fingerprint company in Canada.
So, if you need an RCMP criminal record check from Italy, do not plan your application around a fingerprint appointment at the Canadian mission.
Step 1: Send the Original Fingerprint Card to Canada
Do not mail the fingerprint card directly to CCRTIS. The RCMP states that applications from outside Canada must be routed through an accredited fingerprint company in Canada. That company converts the paper fingerprints into a digital transaction and submits them electronically to CCRTIS.
Your workflow therefore looks like this:
| 1 → | 2 → | 3 → | 4 → | 5 → | 6 → | 7 → |
| Fingerprint appointment in Italy | Original paper fingerprints | RCMP-accredited company in Canada | Digital submission | CCRTIS | RCMP criminal record search | Final result |
The original card is important. A scan or photocopy does not replace the paper fingerprint document needed for digitisation.
Step 2: Wait for the RCMP to Complete the Search
Once the fingerprints reach CCRTIS, the processing timeline depends on the result and whether manual processing is required.
The RCMP currently publishes these approximate processing times:
As per the RCMP, some applications can take longer because of incomplete information or the need to clarify parts of the application. Delivery time for the mailed certificate is additional.
These are RCMP processing times after electronic submission. They do not represent the complete Italy-to-Canada turnaround.
You also need to account for:
Italy-to-Canada timing matters
Italy is normally six hours ahead of Toronto, although the difference can temporarily change around the countries' daylight-saving transitions.
That matters when a provider in Italy says a card has been received or submitted in Canada. A late-afternoon appointment in Italy may still be the same working day in Toronto only in limited circumstances.
Public holidays matter too. Ferragosto around August 15 can affect Italian business and courier schedules, while Canadian statutory holidays can affect the receiving side. Christmas and New Year closures can create another bottleneck.
If your deadline falls close to August 15 or the Christmas/New Year period, build extra courier and business-day margin into the schedule.

The best way to avoid delays when getting your RCMP criminal record check from Italy is to look at what happens when the process does not go smoothly.
Scenario 1: The fingerprint card is rejected
Suppose the paper card arrives in Canada and the impressions are too unclear to process.
The problem is no longer just the fingerprint appointment. You now have:
| 1 → | 2 → | 3 → | 4 → |
| New appointment | New fingerprint card | Another international shipment | Another Canadian submission |
This can add weeks. That is why the card should be visually checked before leaving the appointment.
Scenario 2: The courier is delayed
A courier delay does not necessarily affect RCMP processing itself, but it delays the date on which the Canadian company can digitize and submit your fingerprints.
For an applicant working toward an immigration or employment deadline, that lost week matters even if the RCMP later completes the search within its published processing time.
Scenario 3: A possible record match requires manual processing
This is the biggest timing difference. A potential match is not something a private fingerprinting provider can resolve by “expediting” the application. The RCMP controls its own processing and verification.

Once the RCMP issues your report, check the receiving authority's requirements before sending it to Italy. Some applications end here.
Others may require:
For an RCMP criminal record check, you need an apostille from Global Affairs Canada. The Canadian Consulate in Milan specifically states that apostille applications for Canadian documents must be made through the appropriate Canadian process rather than through its consular services.
What about the Italian translation?
If the receiving Italian authority requires an Italian translation, check whether it wants an asseverata/sworn translation, a particular translator, or another certified format.
In Italy, an asseverata translation involves the translator swearing to the accuracy of the translation before the competent authority, such as a court or, where permitted, a notary. The tribunal does not translate the document itself.
The receiving authority's instructions should determine the exact translation route.
The important sequence is:
| 1 → | 2 → | 3 → | 4 → |
| RCMP report | Apostille if required | Translation in the format required by the receiving authority | Final submission |
Do not assume that every RCMP report used in Italy needs both an apostille and a sworn translation. Confirm both requirements separately.

Applicants choose third-party coordinators like Globeia because they connect the process between Italy and Canada.
You need the correct paper card in Italy, a collector who can complete it properly, an international shipment, an accredited Canadian company, an electronic submission to CCRTIS, and a reliable delivery address for the final certificate.
Globeia provides mobile fingerprint collection in Italy and routes RCMP fingerprint cards through its RCMP-accredited Canadian operation - Globeia Incorporated.

Get started with Globeia's RCMP Criminal Record Check service
The two-country process of getting an RCMP Criminal Record Check can be easily completed once you understand the value of planning.
The biggest practical mistake you can make is treating the RCMP criminal record check like an Italian police certificate. The document, fingerprint format, submission route, processing system, and possible apostille or translation requirements are entirely different.
Start by confirming exactly what the requesting authority wants, then arrange the fingerprint collection and Canadian submission around that requirement. That approach is useful whether you are applying from Rome, Milan, Florence, Naples, Turin, or elsewhere in Italy.
