What a Nevada apostille looks like physically

It is an 8.5 x 11 inch certificate, printed in black and white with a non-embossed Nevada State Seal. The only signature is that of the Secretary of State. It is stapled to the front of the page that carries the original signature or notarisation. Nevada's official red state stamp is applied split between the apostille and the underlying document.

As of January 2026, the Nevada Secretary of State does not accept walk-in apostille appointments at the Las Vegas location. It confirmed directly that no appointments are being scheduled there. The Las Vegas office operates as a drop-box only. All documents submitted in Las Vegas are forwarded to Carson City for processing. Processing time is the same whether you drop documents in Las Vegas or mail them directly to Carson City.

Expedited processing shortens the state office step. It does not shorten certified copy ordering, mail transit, notarisation, or translation.

• Mexico

Mexico is a Hague Convention member. Nevada birth certificates, marriage certificates, and divorce decrees used in INM residency applications require a Nevada apostille. 1. Photocopy submitted instead of original or certified copy. The Secretary of State requires originals or certified copies with authentic signatures and seals. Photocopies and scanned documents are returned immediately.
2. Private document submitted without notarisation. Powers of attorney, diplomas, employment letters, and affidavits must be notarised by a Nevada-licensed notary before the SOS will apostille them. Submitting without notarisation is the most common single rejection reason for private documents.
3. Incorrect notarial statement. Nevada has specific requirements for the wording and format of notarial certificates. An error in the notarial statement, even a minor one, causes rejection.
4. Federal document submitted to the Nevada SOS. FBI background check documents, US passport records, and any document issued by a US federal agency cannot be apostilled by Nevada. These go to the US Department of State in Washington DC.
5. Out-of-state document submitted to Nevada. A document issued in California, Arizona, Texas, or any other state must go to that state's Secretary of State. Nevada cannot apostille what it did not issue.
6. Destination country not named on the request form. The Nevada Apostille Certification Order Form requires the destination country by name. A missing country name prevents the Secretary of State from determining whether to issue an apostille or a certification.
7. No return envelope or courier label. The Secretary of State holds apostilled documents that have no return method. Including a prepaid self-addressed envelope or a prepaid courier label is mandatory.
8. Document not in fileable form. If a document has missing signatures, improper formatting, damaged seals, or other defects, the Secretary of State rejects it as non-fileable. The SOS does not fix documents or contact applicants to describe what is wrong.

Get the right certified copy from the right issuing office. Confirm whether your document needs notarisation before it reaches Carson City. Include the destination country name on the request form. Add a prepaid return envelope or international courier label.
