Is a Canadian Name-Based Criminal Record Check the same as what my employer calls a "background check"?
In most cases, yes. For non-vulnerable sector roles, employers usually mean a Name-Based Criminal Record Check. Globeia’s Canadian Name-Based Background Check is designed to meet this requirement. If your employer specifically requests a fingerprint-based check, contact our team first so we can confirm the correct service.
Can I apply for a Canadian Name-Based Criminal Record Check from outside Canada?
Yes. You can apply through Globeia’s online platform from anywhere in the world. You’ll need:
A valid government-issued photo ID
Your Canadian address history
If you have never had a Canadian address, contact our team before applying. What does "name-based" actually mean? What is being searched?
A Name-Based Criminal Record Check searches Canada’s National Repository of Criminal Records using your full legal name and date of birth. It does not use fingerprints. Because it is name-based, it is considered a preliminary search. A fingerprint-based RCMP Criminal Record Check is required for confirmed identity verification.
What if my name has changed -through marriage, divorce, or a legal name change?
You must apply using your current legal name as it appears on your government-issued photo ID. If your name has changed since you resided in Canada or since any previous criminal record was recorded, include your former name or names in the application form where prompted. Omitting a former name may result in an incomplete result. Contact our team if you are unsure how to handle a name change on your application.
Can a Canadian Name-Based Background Check be used for a vulnerable sector position?
No. Vulnerable sector roles require a Vulnerable Sector Check, which must be completed through your local police agency. Globeia’s Name-Based Criminal Record Check cannot be used as a substitute.
Will my employer receive my Name-Based Criminal Record Check result, or do I receive it first?
You receive the result first. Globeia delivers your Canadian Name-Based Criminal Record Check result directly to your registered email address as a PDF. You then choose whether to share it with your employer, immigration authority, or any other requesting body. Globeia does not share your result with any third party without your instruction.
What if the Name-Based Background Check returns a match that is not mine?
If your name and date of birth match a possible record, you may receive an Incomplete result. This does not mean you have a criminal record. A fingerprint-based check may then be required to confirm or eliminate the match.
Can I use the same Canadian Name-Based Criminal Record Check result for multiple purposes?
It depends on the organisation requesting the check. Some accept the same result within a validity period, usually three to six months, while others require a new check each time. Always confirm their requirements directly.
What if I have lived in multiple Canadian provinces - does that affect my Name-Based Criminal Record Check?
That’s not a problem. The National Repository of Criminal Records is a nationwide database, so your Canadian history is searched across all provinces in one check. Be sure to include all Canadian addresses accurately in your application.
What language is my Canadian Name-Based Criminal Record Check result issued in?
Results are issued in English. If you require a certified translation of your result for submission to a foreign authority, Globeia's certified translation service can coordinate this alongside your Name-Based Criminal Record Check application as a combined workflow.
How many times can I apply for a Canadian Name-Based Background Check?
There is no limit on how many times you can apply. Each application is a fresh search against the National Repository of Criminal Records at the time of submission. If your previous result has expired or a requesting organisation requires a more recent one, simply reapply through Globeia's online portal. Each application is processed independently
