In this guide: why Spain-based registrants can’t use Live Scan, how to work backwards from your deadline, which Barcelona-specific details cause rejected cards (double surnames and date formats included), what to do about biometric data under Spanish and EU privacy rules, and how to get your card to FINRA without losing weeks.
FINRA fingerprinting in Barcelona means having your prints taken in ink on a FINRA-specific paper card by a trained person, then getting that card to FINRA in the United States within 30 days of your firm filing the U4. Working from an office in 22@, a coworking space in Eixample or your flat in Gràcia doesn’t change the requirement.
If you work in Barcelona for a US broker-dealer, or you’ve just joined a firm that is a FINRA member, you may soon get an email saying your Form U4 has been filed and you need to be fingerprinted. This is a required step for FINRA background check.
Rule 17f-2 requires member firms to fingerprint their partners, directors, officers and employees. A person is exempt only if all three of these are true:
If any one of these fails, you’re in scope. Spanish nationality, EU citizenship, a NIE or TIE, or working remotely don’t create an exemption. Staff who aren’t registered with FINRA but still must be fingerprinted are filed on Form NRF rather than Form U4.
There is one narrow route. If the law of a country restricts fingerprinting, the firm can ask the SEC for relief, and FINRA extends the 30-day period while the request is pending. Don’t assume Spain qualifies. Check with your compliance team before relying on it.

Who we see needing this in Barcelona

| This is the one that satisfies Rule 17f-2. Your prints go through the FINRA program, the FBI runs the check, and the outcome is recorded in CRD for your firm. Prints collected for another purpose can’t be reused. | Issued by Spain’s Ministry of Justice. It records Spanish criminal history and has no role in FINRA registration. |
If your firm has filed a U4, order the FINRA check and nothing else as a substitute. If you also need a Spanish residence or US visa document, those require separate paperwork.
Pay Attention to These Details
The person taking your prints fills in the card, but they can only work with what you bring. These are the places where Spain-based registrants tend to hit problems:
1. Get the correct FINRA card
FINRA accepts only its own approved card. Your firm arranges it, and your details must match your CRD record before anyone takes your prints. Ask your compliance team to confirm that before the appointment.
2. Find someone qualified to take the prints
The card must be completed and signed by the person who takes your prints. See the options below.

3. Prepare for the appointment
Bring two original government-issued IDs. Copies are not accepted. Common choices in Spain:

4. Ship the card
The card has to reach FINRA Document Services in the US. Depending on your firm’s process, you send it, your firm in Spain sends it, or it goes to your firm’s US office first. Follow your firm’s instructions.
5. Track the result in CRD
You cannot do this directly. FINRA doesn’t email you to confirm receipt. Your firm sees progress in the Central Registration Depository (CRD). Two outcomes to know early:
In practice you have four options for FINRA fingerprinting in Barcelona:
Option 1: Globeia’s Ciutat Vella office
Visit our walk-in office at Av. de Francesc Cambó 17, 1st floor, Ciutat Vella, 08003 Barcelona, close to Metro Jaume I (L4) and Urquinaona (L1, L4).
We’re open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 11:00 to 15:00, by appointment. The streets around the office are pedestrianised, so come on foot or by metro. Appointments take 15 to 30 minutes.
Option 2: Mobile fingerprinting at home or work
A trained associate comes to you anywhere in Barcelona and the metro area, including Eixample, Gràcia, Poblenou, 22@, Sarrià-Sant Gervasi, Sants-Montjuïc, Badalona, L’Hospitalet, Sant Cugat, Castelldefels, Sitges, Sabadell and Terrassa.
This suits executives, remote workers and anyone with a tight schedule. A mobile visit carries an extra fee that depends on your location.
Option 3: On-site group sessions for your office
For new-hire cohorts, a new Barcelona office or a whole back-office team, we can set up in a quiet room at your workplace and process several people in one visit. Group fingerprinting is a good fit for HR and compliance teams.
Option 4: Police or other local providers
Spanish police stations, including Policía Nacional and, in Catalonia, Mossos d’Esquadra, are inconsistent about taking prints for foreign-purpose forms. Some will, many won’t, and some may take prints but decline to sign.
Because the person who takes the prints must sign a FINRA card, ask before you go:
If any answer is no, choose another route. The same questions apply to gestorías and other private providers. Also ask whether they’ve handled FINRA cards before, not just FBI or RCMP forms.

| Common issue | What to check before mailing from Barcelona |
| Missing information | Complete the date of birth, address, printed name, firm name, Org ID and required signatures. An SSN is required if you were born in the United States or its territories. |
| Extra marks on the card | Avoid highlighters and unnecessary writing, as these can cause rejection. Deficient cards may not be returned. |
| Poor fingerprint quality | Ensure the impressions are clear and properly captured. Sterling checks hardcopy cards against FBI specifications before forwarding them for processing. |
Your firm is responsible for submitting a card with all required fields completed. Review the details before shipping to avoid preventable delays.
FINRA fingerprinting involves submitting fingerprints to the FBI for a criminal history check. So, the process includes specific applicant-notification and privacy requirements.
Under the FBI’s noncriminal justice applicant privacy guidance, covered organizations must:
For Barcelona-based employees, these requirements are worth discussing with your firm’s compliance team before the appointment. Ask who is responsible for providing the notices, obtaining consent and explaining how your biometric information will be handled.
Your employer or compliance team should confirm which requirements apply to your particular FINRA fingerprinting arrangement.

A smudged print, a missing field or the wrong card can send you back to the start, with the 30-day clock still running. Globeia reduces that risk in several ways:
Other services in the same visit. If you also need an FBI Identity History Summary, an RCMP check or another country’s police clearance, the same appointment can cover it.
Fingerprinting starts from €100. Not sure what you need? Book a free 15-minute call and we’ll tell you what applies to your situation before you pay for anything.
Globeia is not endorsed by FINRA, the FBI or any government authority. Results are issued by the relevant authority, and processing times are outside any provider’s control.
Under the GDPR, fingerprints used to identify someone are a special category of personal data, and Spain’s data protection authority (AEPD) has taken a cautious line on biometrics at work. In its 2023 guidance, which focused on time and attendance systems, it said that consent isn’t a legal basis in the workplace because of the imbalance between employee and employer.
FINRA fingerprinting is a different purpose from clocking in, and the lawful basis is a question for your data protection officer or counsel, not for this blog. But it’s a good reason for a Spanish employer to think it through rather than just ask employees to sign something. Questions to take to your DPO:
On the employee side, you’re entitled to ask these questions. A good provider will explain how your card is handled.
Most people first hear about FINRA fingerprinting in a short email after the U4 is filed. If you’re joining a US-linked firm in Barcelona, ask about it early, book your appointment the same week and use a tracked courier. The deadline is manageable with a plan, and difficult without one.
