• While you were a resident, if you ever needed to prove a clean record, you got your Absher Criminal Record Check instantly, since your biometrics were already on file. With attestation or an apostille, this same certificate works abroad too.
• Now that you're moving to another country, an attested Absher Criminal Record Check usually covers proving your Saudi record. But many destination countries also want your fingerprints in their own format, so their own authority (like the FBI, RCMP, or a national police agency) can run an independent check.

Riyadh has one of the largest expat populations in the Gulf, and a good number of them eventually need their fingerprints processed for something outside Saudi Arabia. The reasons vary quite a bit, but a few groups come up again and again:

High-Income Western, South Asian, and Filipino Expats Relocating from Saudi Arabia: Many people living in Riyadh are not headed back to their home country next. They are applying for permanent residency somewhere new, like Canada, Australia, or the UK. Most immigration authorities ask for a police certificate from every country you lived in for six months or more since turning 18.

US Citizens Living in Riyadh: Americans based in Riyadh often need an FBI Identity History Summary or background check. This comes up for visa renewals, buying or renting property in Saudi Arabia, and immigration processes in other countries.

There are three main routes for getting your fingerprints taken in Riyadh for international purposes.

Option 1: General Directorate of Criminal Evidence (Al Malaz)

This is the official government office for fingerprinting in Riyadh. It's located on Ibn Qaim Al Jouziyah Street in Al Malaz, and it's listed on Absher under the name Forensic Evidence Department in Riyadh. It's open Sunday through Thursday, from 8 AM to 2 PM.

Before you go, you need to follow a few steps beforehand:

• Bring Your Own Fingerprint Cards - Saudi authorities do not keep blank foreign fingerprint cards on hand. You need to either download and print the correct form yourself, or get it from a provider beforehand.
• Get an Official Letter From Your Country's Embassy in Riyadh - This letter should be addressed to Saudi authorities, requesting the fingerprinting service on your behalf. Every embassy, whether it's the US Embassy or the Embassy of Canada, has its own version of this letter.
• Letter Must Be Attested By the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) - Take the embassy letter to MOFA to get it officially stamped before it will be accepted at the fingerprinting office. 

Once you have the stamped letter, your printed fingerprint card, and your Iqama or passport, the actual fingerprinting at this office is usually quick.

Option 2: Local Police Stations

Certain neighborhood police stations in Riyadh, such as Al Hayathim Police Station, also handle physical fingerprint cards for international background checks.

The requirements here stay exactly the same as Option 1. You still need your own printed fingerprint card and an embassy letter attested by MOFA. This step is mandatory at police stations too.

Also, not every station has an officer available on a given day who is authorized to sign and stamp international background check forms. So, confirm this by calling ahead.

Option 3: Local Fingerprinting Service Providers (Recommended)

This is by far the fastest and smoothest option available in Riyadh. Private, licensed fingerprinting providers handle this process regularly and already have experience with the exact formats different countries ask for.

A few reasons this option is the best for you:

• They usually already have blank fingerprint cards for the most common countries.
• Many of them don't require the MOFA attested embassy letter, which removes one of the most time consuming steps in the entire process.

Many general document or attestation offices in Riyadh advertise fingerprinting as a side service. Look for a provider that has a consistent, visible history of doing this specifically.

Ask directly whether they know your destination country's exact format

A properly experienced provider should immediately know whether your destination country needs an FD-258, C-216C, a specific embassy issued card, or a digital submission.

Be cautious of anyone promising to skip verification steps entirely

Some destination countries and processes cannot legally bypass certain requirements no matter what a provider promises. If someone tells you they can skip a required document or attestation step that other providers say is mandatory, verify this independently before trusting them.

Missing or Incomplete MOFA Referral Letter

If you're going through a government office or police station, your embassy letter must be attested by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs before it's accepted. People show up with the embassy letter alone, not realizing the MOFA stamp is a separate, mandatory step. Get this attestation first, before you plan your visit to the fingerprinting office.

Wrong Fingerprint Card Format for the Destination Country

Every country has its own specific card. Bringing the wrong card, or a photocopy instead of an original, often means the visit is wasted and you have to start over. Confirm the exact format your destination country needs before you go anywhere.

Prayer Times and the Sunday to Thursday Work Week

Government offices, and many private businesses, pause briefly during the five daily prayer times. On top of that, the work week in Saudi Arabia runs Sunday through Thursday, with Friday and Saturday being the weekend. Anyone used to a Monday to Friday schedule can easily lose a day or two by planning around the wrong week.

Public and National Holidays Shutting Relevant Offices for Days

Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha, Saudi National Day, and Founding Day can shut down government offices for several days at a stretch, sometimes closer to a week during the two Eid holidays.
