Fingerprinting in Thailand: International Background Checks, Visas, and Work Permits

If you are living in Thailand and someone has just asked you for a background check, fingerprinting is probably not something you have thought much about before now. It sounds like a small, almost forgettable step, but for a lot of people in Thailand, it can be more confusing than expected.

Part of the confusion comes from the fact that Thailand is home to such a mixed group of foreigners. Retirees, teachers, employees on work permits, and people planning a move somewhere else are all being asked for fingerprints, but not for the same reason, and not always by the same authority. Add to that the mix of embassies, police offices, and private providers, and it is easy to end up unsure of where to actually go or what you even need.

Whether you are trying to figure out where to get fingerprinting in Thailand or what happens to your prints once they are taken, you will find it here, explained in a way that is simple to follow and actually useful. Keep reading!

4 Types of People Who Need Fingerprinting in Thailand Most

Below are the 4 most common groups of people in Thailand requiring fingerprinting services:

1. Retirees on a Retirement Visa

blog-image

People who move to Thailand on a retirement visa, especially the Non-Immigrant O-A visa, are one of the largest groups affected. This visa now asks for a police background check as part of the application. If you already live in Thailand and later want to apply for residency in another country, or extend your stay, you may be asked to prove you have no criminal record here too.

2. Foreign Teachers

Schools in Thailand usually ask for a Criminal Record Check from your home country before they even hire you, and it usually cannot be older than three months. On top of that, once you are working in Thailand, you may also need a Thai Criminal Record Check (Criminal Record Check) for your work permit or teaching license. Because the role involves working closely with children, this group faces some of the strictest checks of anyone in the country.

3. People on Work Permits (Non-Immigrant B Visa)

If you are working in Thailand under a Non-Immigrant B visa, background checks are a normal part of the process. Some employers or Thai consulates now ask for both a clearance from your home country and a Thai Criminal Record Check, especially if you have lived in Thailand for a long time. This is done to confirm your record is clean both at home and locally.

4. Expats Applying for a Visa, Residency, or Job in Another Country After Living in Thailand

This group includes any foreigner who has spent time in Thailand and now needs to prove that time was clean, for a completely different reason. This could be applying for permanent residency somewhere else, taking a job abroad, applying to a university, or even adopting a child. In all these cases, the receiving country wants a fingerprint-based Criminal Record Check from every country you lived in for a certain period, including Thailand if you were here long enough. The most requested background check here is an FBI background check from US citizens, among others.

Thai Criminal Record Check vs International Background Check: Two Different Documents People Confuse

Many people living in Thailand assume that once they get their fingerprints taken here, they are done, and that this single step covers whatever background check their destination country is asking for.

The Thai Criminal Record Check and an international background check, like an FBI Criminal Record Check, an RCMP criminal record check, or a Singapore COC, are two separate documents. They are issued by two different governments, they check two completely different records, and one cannot replace the other.

Since both processes involve fingerprints, it feels normal to think one can stand in for the other. Some people believe that giving their fingerprints once, at one office, is enough to satisfy every requirement. This is not true.

Primary Biometric RequirementRoyal Thai Police Fingerprint Form or standard 10-print ink card like FD-258.Country-specific cards or fingerprint forms.

The most important thing to remember here is this. It does not matter if you are a Thai national or a foreigner. If you have lived in your home country and in Thailand for a good amount of time, you will most likely be asked for both documents. One background check from your home country, and one from Thailand. These two processes are handled separately, follow different steps, use different forms, and take different amounts of time. Getting one done does not mean the other one is no longer needed.

Types of Background Checks Requested From Thailand (And the Fingerprint Cards Each One Needs)

There is a large and mixed foreign community here in Thailand, and the size of that group keeps growing. It is predominantly composed of citizens from North America (United States, Canada), Western and Northern Europe (United Kingdom, Germany, France, Nordics), East Asia (Japan, China, South Korea, Hong Kong), Australia, New Zealand, and regional financial hubs like Singapore.

These expats in Thailand are heavily concentrated in specific urban and coastal hubs due to their careers and lifestyles, like Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Pattaya, Chon Buri, Hua Hin, and Koh Samui.

Because these residents come from so many different countries, they don't all need the same background check. Each country runs its own system, uses its own issuing authority, and has its own rules on whether fingerprints are even required. Some countries need a full set of ink fingerprints on a specific form. Others barely use fingerprints at all and rely on your name and date of birth instead.

Fingerprinting Services in Thailand by City: Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and More

Where you go for fingerprinting in Thailand depends a lot on where you live. Check below some of your options in the major cities, and what to do if you are somewhere else.

If you live in Bangkok

You can get your fingerprints taken at the Criminal Record Check Service Center. This office handles fingerprinting for police checks and similar needs. This is the address:

27/40 Public Service Center, Special Branch Bureau,

Thung Song Hong, Lak Si, Bangkok 10210

Phone: 02-5511-999

If you live in Chiang Mai

Those based in Chiang Mai have the option of getting their fingerprint card inked at the Scientific Crime Detection office for Chiang Mai Province. Below are the details:

Chotana Rd, T. Changphuak, A. Muang, Chiang Mai 50300

Phone: 053-219-591

Office hours: Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM

Keep in mind, you will need to bring a letter in Thai from the organization requesting your fingerprints, your original passport with a photocopy, and a fee of 100 THB.

If you live in Phuket, Pattaya, or anywhere else

You have two main options here, your local police station or a private fingerprinting service provider nearby.

  • Local Police Stations: You will need to call ahead and ask if fingerprinting is available. Most stations do not keep fingerprint cards in stock, and getting an appointment is not always guaranteed.
  • Private Fingerprinting Providers: These are usually your best option. Many of them keep fingerprint cards on hand, and they tend to have more experience with international fingerprinting requirements. Some even offer mobile services, where someone comes to your home with everything needed to get it done.

Where You Won't Get International Fingerprinting Support in Thailand

A lot of people assume their embassy or consulate can help with fingerprinting, but that is usually not the case. Foreign missions in Thailand, including the US and Canadian embassies, are set up mainly for visa biometrics and other consular work, not fingerprinting for background checks or other purposes.

Some embassies do offer a bit of help. For example, the US Embassy in Bangkok will give you an FD-258 fingerprint card for free if you need one. But even then, they will not actually take your fingerprints for you. You will still need to visit a police office or a private provider to get that part done.

How to Find a Good Fingerprinting Service Provider in Thailand

blog-image

Step 1: Start with a quick online search

Search for terms like "fingerprinting near me," "fingerprint shop near me," or "fingerprinting services near me." This will give you a list of providers closest to your location, which is usually your best starting point.

Step 2: Check what services they offer

Once you have a few names, look into the details of what each one provides.

  • Do they offer in office appointments, mobile appointments, or both?
  • If you need someone to come to you, confirm that mobile service is actually available in your area.

Step 3: Read their reviews

Reviews can tell you a lot about how a provider actually operates. Filter the reviews to show the most recent ones first, since older reviews may not reflect how the business runs today. Look for comments about wait times, professionalism, and whether the fingerprinting was accepted without issues.

Step 4: Call or email them directly

If you find a phone number or email listed, reach out and ask a few key questions before booking:

  • Do you keep fingerprint cards in stock, or do I need to bring my own?
  • Do you carry out identity verification as part of the process?
  • Are you familiar with fingerprinting for international purposes, like visas or background checks?

Step 5: Check their website, if they have one

A provider with a website usually shares more useful details upfront, like pricing, service areas, and the types of fingerprinting they handle. This can save you a step and help confirm they are set up for what you need.

Step 6: Do a bit of your own research

Before booking, take a few minutes to look them up further. See how long they have been in business, whether they specialize in international fingerprinting, and if there is any other feedback about them online outside of the reviews on their page.

  2. Complete Face ID verification. This confirms your identity before your appointment is locked in.
  3. Your associate comes to you. Once everything is set, our associate arrives at your chosen location with all the equipment and materials needed to complete your fingerprinting on the spot.

What to Expect After Fingerprinting in Thailand

Getting your fingerprints taken is just one part of the background check process. Once that step is done, there are still a few more things to take care of before everything is complete.

Submission to the Authorities Abroad

After your prints are collected, they need to be submitted to the relevant authority in the country requesting them, such as the FBI or RCMP. This can be done by mail, courier, a service provider, or an accredited company that handles the submission for you.

Document Authentication

Once you receive your background check result, it needs to be authenticated before it can be used officially, especially if it is going to be used in another country. How this works depends on whether the country involved is part of the Hague Apostille Convention.

  • For Hague member countries, an apostille is usually enough to confirm the document is genuine.
  • For non-Hague countries, the document needs to go through a longer legalization process, which usually involves the issuing country's foreign ministry and the embassy of the destination country.

For use in Thailand specifically, this part gets a little more detailed. Thailand officially acceded to the Hague Apostille Convention on June 30, 2026. But the Convention will only enter into force for Thailand on February 28, 2027. So until that date arrives, documents being used in Thailand still need to go through the usual legalization process rather than a simple apostille.

Translation

If your document is not already in the language required, it will need to be translated by a certified translator. For use in Thailand, documents generally need to be translated into English or Thai, depending on where they are being submitted and who is requesting them. Using a certified translator matters here, since translations done without proper certification are often rejected by the receiving authority.

Handling all of this on your own can mean juggling multiple agencies, from authentication offices to certified translators. Globeia can take this off your plate too. Just mention the services you need in the SmartForm when you book, whether it's submission coordination, authentication, or translation, and we'll handle the rest for you.

Conclusion

Fingerprinting in Thailand touches many parts of life here, visas, work permits, residency abroad, even adopting a child. And as this blog has shown, the process looks different depending on who you are and which country is asking for your prints. What matters most is not treating this as a one time task you check off and forget. Your fingerprint card, your background check, and the paperwork that follows all need to line up with what the receiving authority actually wants. Knowing the right office and the next step saves you from that.

FAQs

Can I get my fingerprints taken at the US Embassy in Bangkok?

No. Foreign embassies in Thailand, including the US and Canadian embassies, do not take fingerprints for background checks. The US Embassy can provide a blank FD-258 fingerprint card for free, but you must visit a local police station or a private provider to have your prints taken.

Do local Thai police stations supply fingerprint cards?

Most local police stations do not keep international fingerprint cards in stock. You usually need to bring your own official card, such as the FD-258 or C-216C, or hire a private service that supplies country-specific cards.

Is a background check mandatory for a Thailand Non-Immigrant O-A retirement visa?

Yes. Applying for a Non-Immigrant O-A retirement visa requires a background check from your home country or country of residence to prove you have no criminal history.

Can I get a Thai Criminal Record Check after I have already moved out of Thailand?

Yes. You can apply from abroad by getting your fingerprints taken at a police station or Royal Thai embassy in your current country. Then you need to mail the fingerprint cards, copies of your ID/passport/visa and a self addressed envelope to Royal Thai Police. You can also hire a representative or agency in Thailand to submit on your behalf.

What is the difference between a name-based check and a fingerprint-based check?

A name-based check uses your full name and date of birth to search local databases. A fingerprint-based check compares your physical ridge patterns against central national databases like the FBI or RCMP. Fingerprint checks are more reliable and are required for high-level security clearances, permanent residency, and work permits.

I have lived in Thailand for over a year on a work permit. Do I need a Thai Criminal Record Check now?

It depends on your employer and your visa type. Some work visa holders are asked for a Thai clearance along with one from their home country, especially after living in Thailand for a longer stretch. Check with your employer or the Thai consulate handling your renewal to confirm.

I live in Phuket. Where can I get fingerprinting for an FBI background check?

You have two main options. You can call your local police station and ask if fingerprinting is available, though they do not always keep cards in stock or offer appointments. Or you can use a private fingerprinting provider, which usually has more experience with international requirements and sometimes offers mobile service too.

Can I use the same fingerprint cards for two different background checks?

No. Each country has its own fingerprint form and its own process. A form used for an FBI check is not the same as one used for an RCMP or Singapore check. You will need to get fingerprinted separately for each one, using the correct form each time.

Do private fingerprinting services in Thailand keep cards for other countries?

Many do. Experienced providers, like Globeia Thailand, keep fingerprint cards on hand for common destinations like the USA, Canada, UK, and Australia, so you do not need to source or print your own card before the appointment.
