Need fingerprinting in Abu Dhabi for a foreign background check? Learn where to get your fingerprints taken and how to choose the right service for your application. This blog covers the documents you need, the steps involved, and how to send your fingerprint card abroad.
People who need fingerprinting in Abu Dhabi for an international background check can start with three options: the Ministry of Interior office in Zayed Sports City, selected Abu Dhabi Police stations, or private fingerprinting services. Private providers may also arrange appointments at your home or workplace. Since not every location handles internationally compliant fingerprint cards, check the requirements of the agency requesting your background check before choosing where to go.
You also need to think about what you need beyond the fingerprinting appointment itself. If you only need your prints taken, a government office may be enough, provided it accepts your card. If you would rather have someone check the card, guide you through submission, or help with document attestation when required, look for a private provider that offers those services. And don’t forget to check the total cost before making your decision.
Short on time? This table gives you the main answers. The sections after it explain each point in plain steps.
| Question | Quick Answer |
| Who needs it? | Anyone whose visa, job, licence, or study file asks for a fingerprint-based background check from another country or your home country's police. |
| Where in Abu Dhabi? |
|
| Which form? | The card your agency names. For the US, that is the FBI fingerprint card (FD-1164 or FD-258). For Canada, it is the C-216C. Some countries use their own card. |
| Ink or digital? | Ink prints rolled on a card are the most common. |
| How long? | The appointment usually takes 15 to 30 minutes. After that, the agency's own processing time applies. |
| What can go wrong? |
|
Many people in Abu Dhabi assume their fingerprints are already on record because they gave them for their Emirates ID. That is true, but those prints stay inside UAE government systems. A foreign agency cannot request them, and it will not accept your Emirates ID in place of a fingerprint card.
The two are taken for different reasons, by different offices, and they end up in different places.
| Parameter | Emirates ID Biometrics | Fingerprinting for a Foreign Agency |
| What it is | A digital scan taken when you apply for or renew your Emirates ID. | A full set of ten fingerprints, taken on the agency's card or in a format it accepts. |
| Who takes it | A centre of the federal identity authority (ICP). | A trained technician at the Ministry of Interior, a police station or a private provider. |
| Where the prints go | Into UAE government records. | To the foreign agency, such as the FBI, RCMP or AFP, which searches its own records. |
| Can a foreign agency use it? | No | Yes, that is its only purpose. |
| What you get at the end | Your Emirates ID | A signed (and sometimes stamped) fingerprint card, or a digital copy. |
| When you need it | At ID issue and renewal. | Only when a foreign agency or authority asks for it. |
Canada's immigration department also makes a similar point, that fingerprints given for a police certificate are separate from the biometrics you give for a visa application. Check which one your letter is asking for before you book anything.

These are the situations that most frequently lead to a fingerprint request for people living in Abu Dhabi.
Moving from Abu Dhabi to Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand or the US
Immigration offices usually ask for police certificates from every country you have lived in. If you once lived in the US or Canada, your request letter may ask for an FBI or RCMP criminal record check. That check is based on fingerprints, even though you now live in Abu Dhabi.
Joining a Company, Hospital, or School in Abu Dhabi from Overseas
New hires from abroad are generally asked for a police certificate from the countries they lived in before. According to a few UAE officials, new employment residency permits need one from each country you lived in during the last five years. You should still ask your employer's visa team (called the PRO) what applies now.
Golden Visa and Long-Term Residency Applications
These files can ask for proof of a clean record from your earlier countries of residence. The authority or your sponsor gives you the list. You only need fingerprints when the other country's certificate is based on them.
Study Visas, Adoption, and Family Applications
Some student visas, adoption cases and family sponsorships ask for police certificates, mostly for adults. If you or a family member lived abroad before, the checklist may include a fingerprint-based certificate.
HR and Corporate Onboarding
HR teams bringing in several new hires at once need each person's prints taken separately, on the right card for that person's country. A group appointment saves everyone time and keeps all the deadlines on the same track.

Option 1: Ministry of Interior Fingerprinting Office
The US Embassy's page says fingerprints can be taken by the Ministry of Interior on Arab Gulf Street in Zayed Sports City, opposite Mediclinic Hospital on Airport Road. The same page says the UAE fingerprinting facilities do not hand out blank cards, so you need to bring yours.
To make sure your fingerprints are captured properly, take these with you:
Location: Arab Gulf Street, Zayed Sports City, opposite Mediclinic Hospital on Airport Road.
Hours: Monday to Thursday, 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM. Friday, 7:30 AM to 12:00 PM. Call ahead to confirm before you travel, as timings can change.
Option 2: Abu Dhabi Police
Some Abu Dhabi Police stations can take fingerprints for international background checks, but you still need to bring your own fingerprint card. Not every officer is trained in international fingerprinting standards, and the way prints are rolled and checked can differ from one station to another. If your agency is strict about quality, ask first whether the station has taken prints on international fingerprint cards before.
Option 3: Private and Mobile Fingerprinting Services
Private providers are built around international agency requirements. They usually offer:
Mobile services in Abu Dhabi generally cover these areas:
Fingerprinting in Al Ain and the Western Region
Living outside the island does not mean you have to travel into the city. Abu Dhabi Police and Emirates ID run centres in both Al Ain and the Western Region, but not every one offers fingerprinting on international cards. Call the centre before you go and ask whether it will take prints on your agency's card.

Fingerprinting in Abu Dhabi Special Cases
Worn or Faint Fingerprints
Heavy manual work, frequent hand washing, some skin conditions, and age can wear down the ridges on your fingertips. Tell the technician before they start. It may take a few attempts, and some agencies have a process for prints that stay unreadable, so ask yours.
Children and Teenagers
Abu Dhabi Police have said in past statements that children's fingerprints are not clear enough to use for identity. Agencies set their own age rules, so check yours before you book an appointment for a child.
Applicants Who Changed Their Name
List all your previous names and tell the agency before you submit. Write your current name on the card, and ask the agency where the earlier names should go.
Getting your prints taken is only the first half. The card still has to reach the right office in good condition, and in many cases it needs extra stamps before anyone accepts the result. Most delays happen in this part. So, you should know the route before you leave your appointment.
Submitting to the Agency
There are three common ways to get your card to the agency. And the actual processing starts when the agency receives the card, not when you post it.
| Route | What you do | Tracking |
| Post it yourself | You mail the card, forms and payment to the agency. | Only if you pay for a tracked courier. |
| Use an approved channeler or accredited agency | You hand the card to a company the agency recognises, and it submits for you. | Usually yes, through the company's own online dashboard. |
| Use a full-service provider | The same company takes your prints and submits them. | Usually yes, through the provider's dashboard. |
Important: Not every agency allows every route. The RCMP works through accredited companies that turn ink prints into digital files and send them in. So ask before you pay anyone for an RCMP criminal record check from Abu Dhabi.
Courier from Abu Dhabi
We recommend a tracked express courier over regular post for every part of the process. These work well for deliveries to the US, Canada, the UK, Australia and most other countries:
| Our Tip for Abu Dhabi Applicants: Declare the parcel as documents with no commercial value. Use a street address, since couriers usually cannot deliver to PO boxes, and ask for a signature on delivery. Keep the receipt and the tracking number, and ask the courier about insurance for the parcel. |
Plan for the return trip too. Some agencies, such as the RCMP, send results by regular post with no tracking number. If that applies to you, ask whether the result can go to your provider instead of your home address.
Attestation and Legalisation
An apostille is a single stamp that countries in an international treaty accept instead of a longer chain of approvals. The UAE is not part of that treaty, so a plain apostille is not accepted for UAE use. The UAE uses a step-by-step system called attestation or legalisation, where each office confirms the stamp of the one before it.

Arabic Translation
Some UAE authorities ask for an Arabic translation of international documents, and some accept English. Ask your authority before you pay for one.
If you do need it, the translation usually comes after the attestation steps, so the stamps are translated along with the document. Ask which translators the authority accepts, because many only take translations from licensed legal translators.
