If you are living in Mexico and need a Canadian criminal record check, you are likely preparing for an immigration application, permanent residency, a work permit, adoption proceedings, or another official process. This blog walks you through the types of checks available, the step-by-step application process, and everything you need to know to get it done correctly from Mexico.
Canadian authorities, employers, and immigration bodies frequently require a Canadian criminal record check from Mexico as part of their screening process. Whether you are applying for Canadian permanent residency, a work permit, or a visa, the requesting authority will specify which type of check they need. Selecting the wrong one can delay your application significantly.
Name-Based Check
A Name-Based Check verifies your criminal history by matching your name and date of birth against records in the Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC). This check is sufficient for employment or volunteering roles where a fingerprint-based check is not specifically required.Enhanced Canadian Criminal Background CheckA Police Information Check (PIC) is more detailed and may reveal convictions, charges, warrants, non-convictions, judicial orders, and conditional or absolute discharges from relevant police databases. This is also commonly used for employment and volunteering purposes.RCMP Criminal Record CheckThe RCMP Criminal Record Check is a fingerprint-based verification conducted by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Because it is fingerprint-based rather than name-based, it produces a more precise result and is the check most commonly required for immigration, permanent residency, and visa applications from Mexico.
Step 1: Confirm the Type of Check Required
Before applying, confirm with the requesting authority, such as IRCC or an employer, exactly which check they need. Immigration and permanent residency applications typically require the RCMP Criminal Record Check. Employment roles may only require a Name-Based Check or Police Information Check. Step 2: Prepare Your Identity DocumentsYou will need two valid government-issued identification documents. At least one must be a government-issued photo ID containing your full name, date of birth, signature, and photograph, such as a passport or national identity card. Photocopies of both documents are required for submission. Step 3: Have Your Ink Fingerprints CollectedFor an RCMP Criminal Record Check, fingerprints must be collected in person by a trained associate on the official C-216C form. Only ink fingerprint collection is used- digital or electronic fingerprint capture is not permitted for submissions from outside Canada. The CCRTIS-approved consent form is required for all RCMP submissions and is completed at the time of the fingerprinting appointment. The fingerprint form is completed only in the presence of an authorized associate or technician and is not available for self-completion or independent download. Step 4: Submit Your ApplicationApplicants outside Canada cannot submit fingerprints directly to the RCMP. The completed fingerprint forms must be mailed to an RCMP-accredited company in Canada, which digitizes the fingerprints and submits them electronically to the RCMP CCRTIS system. Step 5: Await Your Result from the RCMPThe RCMP independently processes your application and issues the criminal record check result directly. Processing times for a Canadian criminal record check range from 3 to 120 days and are determined entirely by the RCMP based on application volume and individual circumstances. Mailing time is additional.Apostille Authentication
If your Canadian criminal record check in Mexico will be used for official purposes with Mexican authorities, it will likely need to be apostilled. Mexico and Canada are both signatories to the Hague Apostille Convention, meaning Mexican authorities typically require apostille authentication before accepting foreign official documents. Globeia can help you in coordinating apostille or authentication and legalization for Hague and non Hague countries. Also note that Globeia does not directly apostille official government documents and does not perform apostille services on behalf of any government authority. All apostille and authentication requests are submitted by our company to the designated competent government authority on your behalf.
Translation into SpanishMexican authorities may also require your Canadian criminal record check to be translated into Spanish for official use. Globeia's translation service can assist with an accurate, professionally coordinated translation.
