Why the Skills Assessment Comes First in Australian Skilled Migration

When people start looking into Australian skilled migration, they usually focus on things like points scores, state nomination, or how long visas take to process. These are important, but they come later in the process. The very first and most important step is the skills assessment. This step decides whether you are even allowed to continue with your visa application.

Without a positive skills assessment, you cannot:

  • Enter the SkillSelect system
  • Receive an invitation to apply for a visa
  • Lodge a skilled migration visa application

So before anything else, your skills and work experience must be officially approved by an Australian assessing authority.

What the Skills Assessment Really Means

What the assessment actually checks is your daily job duties against Australia's ANZSCO occupation classification system. Not your job title, not your years of experience. They assess what you actually did, every day, and whether those tasks match what Australia says the job involves.

Australia uses a system called ANZSCO (Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations). This system lists all jobs and breaks them down into detailed tasks and responsibilities.

So instead of only looking at your job title or how many years you worked, the assessor checks:

  • What you actually did in your job
  • Whether those duties match the ANZSCO job description
  • Whether your education is relevant to that job

Two people with the same job title can get different results. It comes down to how well your actual tasks match what Australia's system says the job involves.

Skills Assessment Authorities

Each occupation is checked by a specific authority. You must apply to the correct one, or your application may be refused or delayed.

Here are the main assessing bodies:

  • Engineers Australia – for engineering jobs
  • ACS (Australian Computer Society) – for IT and software jobs
  • CPA Australia / CAANZ / IPA – for accounting and finance jobs
  • ANMAC – for nurses and midwives
  • AITSL – for teachers
  • TRA (Trades Recognition Australia) – for trades like electricians and plumbers
  • VETASSESS – for many professional and office-based jobs

Pick the wrong body and you'll lose months. Double-check before you apply.

What Assessors Look At

There are two main things that assessors review:

1. Your Education

They check if your degree or qualification is equal to Australian standards. For example, a 4-year bachelor’s degree from the USA is usually acceptable, but it must be related to your nominated occupation.

2. Your Work Experience

This is the most important part of the assessment. Assessors do not just read your job title. They carefully check your actual daily work tasks. Your experience must clearly match the tasks listed under your ANZSCO occupation.

For example:

  • Saying “managed projects” is too general
  • But explaining tasks like planning projects, managing budgets, coordinating teams, and handling deadlines is much better

The more detailed and clear your duties are, the better your chances of approval.

Reference Letters (Very Important)

You must provide employment reference letters from your previous employers. These letters need to follow a specific format. A proper reference letter must include:

  • Your job title
  • Employment start and end dates
  • Number of hours you worked per week
  • A clear list of your daily duties and responsibilities
  • Company letterhead
  • Signature and contact details of the employer

Vague letters get rejected. A strong career won't save a weak reference letter.

How Long Does the Skills Assessment Take & Why You Should Start Early

Processing times depend on the authority and your case:

  • Normal applications: 8 to 16 weeks
  • More complex cases: up to 6 months or more

Some authorities, like Engineers Australia and VETASSESS, often take longer, especially if you have worked in different roles or countries.

A common mistake is spending months researching cities, rent, and lifestyle before starting the skills assessment. By then, the process is already delayed. Bodies like Engineers Australia and VETASSESS can take several months to process applications.

If Australia is a real goal, start the skills assessment straight away. Don’t wait for everything else to be planned. You can look at jobs, cities, and costs at the same time. The assessment is the one step that should begin early.

  • Avoid delays in your visa process
  • Get into the SkillSelect pool faster
  • Plan the rest of your migration smoothly

Start this first. Everything else waits on it and it takes months.
