The weeks before you leave the UK are as administratively busy as the weeks after you arrive in Spain. These are the key tasks to complete before your departure date.
Immigration and legal:
- Visa approved and affixed in passport.
- NIE number obtained from the Spanish Consulate if doing so from the UK.
- Copies of all immigration documents made and stored securely.
HMRC and tax:
- P85 form submitted to HMRC notifying them of your departure.
- UK tax affairs reviewed with an accountant for the transition year.
- S1 form applied for from NHS Overseas Healthcare Services if eligible.
Financial:
- UK bank accounts reviewed- confirm at least one will remain accessible from abroad.
- UK pension providers notified of your move and new address.
- Wise or currency service account set up for ongoing GBP-EUR transfers.
- Any large fund transfers to Spain completed before departure if possible.
Property:
- Decision made on UK property.
- Buildings and contents insurance reviewed and updated for vacant or let property.
Healthcare:
- Private health insurance for Spain purchased and policy documents saved.
- Existing prescriptions reviewed- sufficient supply for transition period obtained.
- GP records requested if needed.
- GHIC card valid and in wallet.
Documents to carry with you:
- Passport with visa
- NIE number document
- Private health insurance documents
- Proof of accommodation in Spain
- S1 form if applicable
- Copies of financial documents
